Saxon- and Bohemian Switzerland
In fact, the area is so unusually mountainous for Germany’s relatively flat north that is has been given the name “Saxon Switzerland” (Sächsische Schweiz).
The area is part of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains, together with the so-called Bohemian Switzerland in neighbouring Czech Republic, known for its characteristic rock formations that are ideal for climbing.
The area is also famous for its beautiful hiking trails, and visitors can expect to see one breath taking natural landmark after another.
Characteristic are the table mountains that appear like towers in the landscape and the rugged rock formations that protrude in the most bizarre shapes from the lush green. So unusual that it looks as if the landscape has been painted.
Under the motto "Leave nature to nature", a forest will develop again, as wild and impenetrable as it used to be. The forests are already very diverse. In various areas, the characteristic living environment has been restored to such an extent that rare animals are settling there again.
The "cellar climate" is also specific to the Elbe Sandstone Mountains. It is cold the bottom and warm at the top. The plants and animals have adapted perfectly to this. For example, in the deepest caverns you will find spruce trees that you would expect in a low mountain region.
